June 14 - Life Flight to Denver / Denver Health Emergency Room

DSC01776.JPGThe life flight was pretty uneventful.  Seth was loaded onto a twin engine airplane.  I was sitting right behind him.  There was a nurse and a medic who tended to him.  He was pretty quiet during the flight.  They had given him some pain medication.  He just kept trying to take the oxygen mask off his nose.  I think it was hurting him because his nose was bruised and battered.

They had an ambulance awaiting us when we arrived in Denver.  It was about a 30 minute drive to Denver Health.  The flight crew had prepared me for what it would be like...controlled chaos!  A swarm of doctors descended upon Seth and were asking me rapid fire questions.  Seth was reasonably cogent.  He could answer some questions and didn't seem to be mixing things up anymore.  He could squeeze your hand and wiggle his toes.  Erinn had told me to make sure that every single doctor knew what I'll call "The Plan".  This is that Seth will not crawl out of this hospital.  He will walk out and be on the path to get back to running, kayaking, biking, skiing and hiking.  So every doctor that asked me a question, I made sure they knew The Plan.

They took him in to get a CT scan and then he was scheduled for emergency surgury to stabalize his right femur.  Seth's family had come from Boulder to be with me.  It was about 2:00 in the morning now.  We were in the waiting room and Dr. Stahel came out to tell us that he would be doing the surgury and that we should go ahead and get a hotel, get some rest, and check on Seth later that morning.  The doctor seems really good.  He answered our questions and seemed really competent.  Seth is in good hands.
